Ad populum appeal to indirect consequences

My brother is facing PMR soon but he's still playing computer game day and night. This make my mum so worried. My mum always use Ad populum appeal to indirect consequences to make my brother feel scare and worry for his future if he doesn't do well in this coming exam.

Mum:" If you don't do well in PMR, your father will thought that you are not good in academic, and your father is having old minded, then he will think that sending you to school is wasting money, he will ask you to go work. And a person without a certificate like you will end up working like a cow and earning with very little salary. With the low salary, you can't afford to buy car and house.Girls in this century will not marry a guy like you.you will end up with no family and die all alone."

Although my mum use Ad populum appeal to indirect consequences to make my brother to feel scare and bad but its still not work.

Tu quoque Fallacy + Ad populum appeal to vanity

This morning, I went to pasar with my mother. After we finished buying stuffs, my mum and I went to a coffee shop and eat breakfast. While we were eating, one of my mum's best friend came and chit-chat with her.I heard thier conversation. They used Tu quoque and Ad populum appeal to vanity.

Aunty:" Madam Lim had try your cake. She said the cake you made was not so good, not smooth enough, not sweet enough and a bit out of shape.She said a lot of people made complain after eating your cake.She said you're not good in baking."

Mum:"How can she possibly said that my cake was not good.She is the one who are not good in baking.Actually the cake that we tried the other day was her handmade and people were complaining about it." ( Tu quoque )

Aunty:" I know you are very good in baking. I love your cake.Nobody can ever make a cake that taste so good. My family member love it, They said you should open a bakery shop. So, can you bake a cake for me on this sunday ? my son birthday is on this sunday." ( Ad populum appeal to vanity)

After my mum heard the praising, she willing to help my aunty.

Re-writing the ending

This afternoon,when we were bored of studying.Pei jun,my room mate thought of a game, which is a interesting game that we played in critical thinking's tutorial class during the last weekend.This game is call re-writing the ending.We have to change a story's ending base on a fairy tale.Pei jun have chose Cinderelle and we started with cinderella's foot fitted perfectly into the highheels.We were given 5 minutes to think about new story's ending line.Pei jun chose a funny ending and i have chose a sad ending.And it was started with pei jun's new story's ending.

Pei jun version:

......Cinderella's foot fitted perfectly into the highheels.When Prince saw it , he was very happy and invited cinderella to dance with him.While they were dancing, the highheels broke and both of them fall down on the floor.The guesses laughed loudly after seeing it.In this moment, the prince was very angry.He immediately stood up and he forgot about cinderella.Cinderella thought he is a gentleman and kept on waiting for the prince's help.She kept on waiting and waiting.Suddenly,she saw a pair of hands,she was very happy and turned around to smile at the prince but she saw a fat and ugly man.This man helped the cinderella and said:' Don't worry baby.I'm Prince's elder brother.And I will marry you." In this moment, the cinderella cried and said:" I will marry you because I have no choice."

My version:

......Cinderella's foot fitted perfectly into the highheels.When the Prince saw it, he was very happy and invited Cinderella to dance with him.They were in love.Suddenly,Prince collapsed.He was then send to a hospital.Ather a body checked up,the doctor told cinderella and the prince that prince has leaukimia and not gonna live long.He only have 3 months left.They both cried. Cinderella and prince decided to get married and move to town and live happily for the rest of the 3 months.After 3 months, prince died and cinderella became a widow and lived lonely for the rest of her live.

Implicit conclusion + Ad Populum appeal to Pity

I like milk especially HL milk.This afternoon, when i went Giant to buy milk. I saw Marigold company is using a implicit conclusion to advertise the latest HL Banana milk."We're going bananas!" is an implicit conclusion.The advertisement is trying to tell the people about the new product of HL milk is in banana flavour.

Then,when i'm choosing whether i should take chocolate milk or try the new banana milk, the sale girl of HL milk come to me. She used Ad Populum appeal to Pity to pursue me to buy from her.
She said:"Miss, can you buy one box milk from me?I have been standing here for about 3 hours, but not even 1 person buy a box of milk from me.If I still cannot make a sale, my boss will fire me.If my boss fire me, I will not have money to buy food for my children, then they will not have food for tonight."
She seem very pity, i then bought 1 box of milk from her.

Leading Question

This morning, when i went church and study bible, i found that jesus liked to use Leading question.He liked to use Leading question to encourage someone to agree with him.It is interesting to note that Jesus' first recorded words are in the form of two questions.

Bible:

Luke records Jesus' trip to Jerusalem at age twelve for the Passover. At the conclusion of the feast, Jesus's parents began the trip home and thought that He was among their family and friends. After His parents could not find Jesus in their company of travelers, they returned to Jerusalem and eagerly sought Him. Finding Jesus in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers both listening to them and asking them questions, Jesus responds to his parent's question saying: "Why is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" (Lk. 2:49)

Jesus trying to guide his parent's to say the things he wants to hear. The question he asked can only answer in certain way and especially the second question ( Did you not know that I must be about M Father's business?". This question can be answer yes or no.

Burden of proof fallacy

Other than petitio principii, i found that my family members like to use Burden of Proof Fallacy when we are chatting.This incident happened when we was having dinner.
Father:"Do u think that you are putting on weight?"
I:"Really?"
Father:"Don't you think so?"
In that moment, I thought of critical thinking and i found that it is very useful to pursue or to argue with someone when one knows critical thinking.
After a few moment, my sis's turn to use Burden of proof Fallacy.
Sis:"Why are you so choosy when come to food?Why dont you eat everything mum cook?"
Brother:"Why should I?Why can't i eat whatever i like?"
Such a weird family i having!We like to use Burden of Proof Fallacy when come to chit-chatting.

Petitio Principii

Today, when I went to visit my sister.I found that she is using Fallacy of Petitio Principii to teach her 2 years old daughter, jane.When she explains something to jane, she will use it because this fallacy will make her understand the words well.

For example, when my sister explains to jane about what is apple, she said "The is a red sweet apple , because it is a fruit with red skin and taste sweet."

Another example is when my brother-in-law praise Jane, he used this fallcy also.

he said " jane, you have pretty face, because you have beautiful eyes, nose and mouth."

Petitio Principii = S is true , because S is true

Red sweet apple = fruit with red skin and taste sweet

Pretty face = beautiful eyes, nose and mouth

Deductive Argument ( Chain argument )

This afternoon, my mum try to pursue me to go celebrate Merdeka Eve at Dataran Merdeka with her on tomorrow night, but I have a lot of assignments to do and I told her that I can't make it. My mum was very angry with me and she keep asking me why.She wanted me to give her a good explaination. Then I thought of critical thinking and i made an deductive argument for my mum."If i go celebrate Merdeka Eve, then I will have not enough time to finish my assignments.If i will have not enough time to finish my assignments, then I will not score in my assignments.So, if i go celebrate Merdeka Eve, then I will not score in my assignments.As conclusion,I can't go celebrate Merdeka Eve on tomorrow night."After i gave this argument for my mum, she allowed me not to go .

Chain Argument:
If i go celebrate Merdeka Eve, then i will have not enough time to finish my assignments.
( If A, then B )
If i will have not enough time to finish my assignments, then i will not score in my assignments.
( If B, then C )
So, if i go celebrate Merdeka Eve, the i will not score in my assignments.

Fallacies of Ambiguity

This morning,when i was talking to my room mate Pei Jun, i found that she was using fallacies of ambiguity.She study critical thinking too but she just didnt realize that she is using fallacies of ambiguity.

Pei Jun said:"I prefer Ann Nee than Cecilia.She is good in academic and co-curiculum.Many guys like her.I think she is gorgeous.Her wearing is so simple and nice and fashionable.I should copy the way she wear and she is my idol now."

I was confused in this moment because i didnt know which one Pei Jun referred to.Was she talking about Ann Nee or Cecilia?Is Ann Nee good in academic and co-curiculum or Cecilia?Is there many guys like Ann Nee or Cecilia?
After all this question came out of my head, I decided to ask Pei Jun which one she was talking about.Finally,she told me that she was refering to is Ann Nee.
